A Scout is Reverent: 2018-2019 Events

“A Scout Is Reverent”:
The 12th Point of the Scout Law
We are inviting all Scout units to dedicate one month’s theme or activity to the 12th Point of the Scout Law: “A Scout is Reverent.”. The Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting has several ideas and options below to help units plan a more balanced program.  Please note that the following activities, though developed by the committee from a Catholic perspective, are nondenominational and open to everyone in grade 6 and above. Three of the activities below are also available for Grades 1-5: Santa Maria, International Awareness and Catholic Camporee (see separate flyers).

·         Sept. 29, 2018 – Founders of Faith in Ohio:
This activity takes participants through the history of the Catholic faith in the United States, with its roots in Baltimore and its expansion westward into the Ohio country. The activity takes place at Ohio’s oldest Catholic parish, Somerset St. Joseph Church, near the site where the first Mass was celebrated. There will be time to explore the site, tour the church and its museum and do rubbings in the parish cemetery.  Overnight camping may be arranged by a unit, with prior approval, at the time applications are submitted. The closing ceremony will be determined by the participants’ needs, taking place at the church either at 5 pm Saturday or in conjunction with the parish’s 8:30 am Sunday Mass. Participants will be asked to choose one of these options at the time of registering. https://columbuscatholic.org/documents/2018/8/Founders%20of%20the%20Faith%20-Edited_2018_A.PDF

·         Oct. 20-21, 2018 – Santa Maria:
This activity is presented at the Jubilee Museum, 57 S. Grubb Street, Columbus. There are two separate sessions to this activity: grades 1-5 will enjoy activities from 1 to 6 pm on Saturday, and grades 6-12 will enjoy a fun overnight in the Jubilee Museum.  Participants will tour the museum and learn how religion came from the Old World to the New World.  The overnight session will include meals; the evening starts with Saturday night’s authentic sailors’ stew.  It continues with the challenge of climbing the rigging at Vertical Adventures.   After returning to the museum, the participants will enjoy eating popcorn while watching a sailing adventure movie.  The evening concludes with the crew cleaning the deck and getting ready for a good night’s sleep on the ship’s deck (the museum floor).  Sunday’s Closing Ceremony will take place after the 8:30 am Latin Mass at Holy Family Church.

·         March 1-2, 2019 – St. Tarcisius:
This activity is presented at a centrally located Catholic Church. Throughout this activity, participants discuss and experience the five hungers of the world. St. Tarcisius, at the young age of eleven, gave his life to protect the body of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.  This fast-moving, fun over-night activity is about 24 hours in length. The Closing Ceremony follows the 5 pm Saturday Mass, where Catholic participants may fulfill their Sunday obligation and receive the Holy Eucharist. https://columbuscatholic.org/documents/2018/8/St%20%20Tarcisius_Final%20Draft_2019.pdf

·         April 27, 2019 – International Awareness:
This activity takes place at Holy Resurrection Church, at the Columbus Melkite Eastern Catholic church.  Did you know that there are 23 Catholic traditions through which you may meet your Sunday obligation to attend Mass?  Come explore and experience the differences and similarities between the traditions. Grades 1-5 will enjoy activities from 9:00 to 11:00 am and grades 6-12 will begin at 9:00 am, have activities, participate in their Mass (“Divine Liturgy”), eat lunch and depart by 1:15 pm.  Learn how the Melkite Eastern Church influenced the vocational life of Father Ignatius, the pastor of Holy Resurrection.  As adults leave this activity, the most frequently over-heard exclamation is: “WOW, this is the best kept secret in Columbus.”

There are also opportunities to learn how to pray and worship, Reconciliation and Mass. The Camporee is one requirement for the Ad Altare Dei Emblem. Departure is by 10:00 am on Sunday morning. A day program is available for grades 1-5 on Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and the Closing Ceremony is after Mass.
